In the past few decades, with Amazon taking forefront and other businesses following suit, online shopping has taken over. An estimated 2.14 billion people shop online, and this number is likely to triple by 2024. According to 2022 statistics, 1 in 7 of those shoppers experienced package theft. What can we do to eliminate theft stress in modern day shoppers?

MEET EMMA | Task Analysis

HOW CAN WE REDUCE PACKAGE THEFT ANXIETY AND DETER THIEVES ALL TOGETHER?

Ideation.

Exploring a wide range of forms and solutions, including a motorized door, a wall attachment, lock buttons, and looking into the “how” for programming solutions. Landing on a pressure sensing alarm plate with LEDs that is disarmed with a key sensor.

Inspiration.

The objective of this product is to make a regular task easier. The aesthetic was inspired by this idea of ease, simplicity, and modern tech. Aiming for a sleek feel.

Improved Solution.

The new device will be an outdoor pressure sensing plate. The delivery would be placed by the deliverer onto the device which would then be armed. If there was an attempt to steal without the disarm method, the device would sound its alarm and proceed to alert the homeowner and authorities as specified. The owner could redeem the package by disarming the device which would reset the loop.

Sizing Prototype.

A prototype of the new design was then created with cardboard and foam-core to analyze sizing of the final product. The mock up proved to show that the original fusion model sizing was too small. Sizing up in height and width for the final prototype to fit Arduino components.

Final MMI Flow Plan.

Moving towards internal components by examining user and machine interaction to determine final inputs and outputs. Using a force sensing resistor to command an LED strip to red. When pressure is lifted the passive buzzer would alarm and begin blinking red. An RFID Module sensor could disarm the buzzer. The RFID would then change the LED strip to blue for ten seconds to alert the user’s cognition sensing. After, the loop would reset.

Final Prototyping Process.

Starting with 3D printing in white PLA for the top and bottom pieces and using clear PLA for the middle LED strip holder.

Then following with sanding those components for a smooth finish. Working from 80 grit sand paper up to 440 grit.

Following with Arduino Uno coding solutions and programming the physical Arduino board with the corresponding parts.

Assembling Process.

The Arduino, breadboard, and battery pack with all wires are stored inside the device

The RFID is taped to a gap to reach the key sensor through the plate

A pressure plate was added when prototyping to act as an added direct pressure to the force sensing resistor.

The FSR wires flood through a wire slit in the top piece where it lies under the pressure plate for direct contact with the plate.

Final Prototype.

Market Matching.

Real company matches for this project to push it into the market.

Amazon : pairing Amazon Delivery with physical Package Protection

Ring : pairing Ring Doorbell security with package security

ADT : pairing home security and safety with package safety
